The home secretary was speaking at the launch of the Public Safety Foundation think tank, which will campaign for a “back to basics” approach to policing. “We must ferociously preserve lawful debate and freedom of expression,” she said. “The police really shouldn’t be intervening into what is the foundation of our democracy. I believe in the police. But the policing in which I believe isn’t riven with political correctness but enshrined in good old-fashioned common sense.”
